Scandalmakers
According the the Hollywood Reporter, though small-budgeted and under-publicized, the sleeper outperformed Korea’s most expensive production, “The Good, the Bad, the Weird,” by selling more than 8 million tickets and enjoying a two-month theatrical triumph. Nam Hyun-soo is a former popular idol star-turned-host of a popular radio show. Now in his mid-30s, he is enjoying his bachelorhood when he suddenly learns that he may be a grandfather after a young girl with a 7 year old son turns up claiming to be his daughter. This shocking news cannot be leaked to the media! Now, Hyun-soo has to use all means to hide his secret and salvage his celebrity image.

This is something unique to be doing a comedy on a guy in his mid 30s turning out to be a grandfather. Inevitably, the increasing difficulty in hiding their relations leads to a climactic choice between personal ambitions and blood ties. Script avoids pratfall comedy and one-liners, settling instead for character-based humor maintained by the terrific chemistry of the three leads.

Scandal Makers was a very strange movie but I think my audience will like it. It was a bit hard to follow at first for me figuring out who was who since they talk online a lot and it looks like a low buget movie, but the story gets more interesting as the movie goes along and it even becomes shocking in the second part of the movie. Again avoiding the obvious route, the script doesn’t climax, but instead continues to a more inclusive ending that’s lower-key.

Scandal Makers is easy going fare that would appeal to a broad spectrum of audiences with its fine comedy and positive messages of love and enduring family ties that remind you of blood running thicker than water. The comedic elements found in the first half of the film works well & the dramatic moments found in the second half doesn’t feel unnaturally forced.  As a nice addition, the resulting feel good feeling from watching the movie is likely to linger with you well after the film’s conclusion.
